'No, Seriously' exhibit brings playful art to Downtown Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. -- Who says artists don't have a sense of humor? A casual stroll through the vastness of Space 301 will disabuse you of that notion. At every turn there is whimsy, idle japery and even a touch of silliness. But the humor is characterized by keen wit and intelligence.

Careful, artists are at play. If the humor emanates from odd places, that's all right too. Call it the smile of reason, a thinking person's view of the human condition.

Such are the pleasures of "No, Seriously: Humor and Happiness in Contemporary Art," which opened July 10 and will remain on view through Sept. 6 at the gallery on Cathedral Square.

Jason Guynes, chairman of the visual arts department at the University of South Alabama, was curator for the show. The artwork, he says, reveals human beings laughing at themselves, "which is a great trait."

Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday; no charge for admission. For details, call 251-208-5671 or visit www.space301.com.
